Eh, I'd still f*ck it.
I watched Dragon Ball: Battle of Gods streamed online, and just for clarification, DO intend to buy it when (if) it comes out in the United States in 2014, and I will not be watching it again until it either (a) gets released stateside, or (b) it's confirmed that it's not getting a stateside release at all. I am not sure of the legality of the site I used, so I won't be linking it--if you hunt around, you might be able to find it. (To be honest, I THOUGHT it was legal because it had the 20th Century Fox logo.)
Some of my thoughts on it:
- REALLY loved the animation--everything was so smooth and crisp! Compare it with some of the earlier DBZ episodes before Kai and you get a good sense of how far the industry itself has come.
- GODDAMMIT MEDIA STOP MAKING ME SHIP THINGS I SHOULDN'T LIKE MAI/TRUNKS I MEAN MAI IS A 40-SOMETHING-YEAR-OLD IN A 10-12 YEAR OLD'S BODY AND HELD TRUNKS AT GUNPOINT I SHOULD NOT HAVE FOUND THAT SCENE AT THE END AS CUTE AS I DID GO SIT IN THE CORNER WITH EPHRAIM AND MYRRH/RIKA AND TERADA-SENSEI AND SHUT YOUR FACES
- Vegeta fucking shone in this movie. If you want a sense of the pride, dignity, and poise of Saiyan royalty, look no farther than this film. #tryingtokeepastraightface
- Congrats to this movie for making me ship ACTUAL CANON COUPLES as well. First time in recent memory that I went seeking out actual Vegeta/Bulma fanart as opposed to Goku/Vegeta. That moment where Beers slapped Bulma and Vegeta LOST IT OH MY GOD IT WAS LIKE I WAS 14 AGAIN AND WATCHING HIM FREAK OUT ABOUT TRUNKS AND THEN VEGETA WAS BLUSHING IT WAS SO CUTE
- Speaking of canon couples OH GOD GOHAN/VIDEL STOP BEING SO FUCKING PRECIOUS. Although no points for Toriyama forgetting that BULLA SHOULD EXIST AT THIS POINT. ...Eh, he forgot that Tao Pai Pan and Launch were things, too, and this is like, legit Toriyama Dragon Ball shit so it's canon and stuff (he co-wrote the script). I just choose to believe that Bulla was there somewhere being watched by Grandma and Grandpa Briefs while Bulma just enjoyed her 38th birthday.
- "Flow" is an awesome song and you should go listen to it. I believe it, and "CHA LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and "Dragon Soul" (Kai's opener), were all sung by the same band. It's got GREAT energy and I like listening to it over and over again.
- CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT FOR GOKU F*CKING FINALLY
- People keep speculating about the end of the movie and are wondering if there are going to be more movies (or even a new series?) ...Eh, personally, I don't buy it. I see another movie maybe...another ten years down the line? I don't know if Toriyama-sensei is going to do a new series, especially considering his involvement with Dragon Quest (and the fact that I'm not quite sure whether or not he WANTS to continue with it or is even sick of it). I mean, don't get me wrong, I would FLIP if another series happened, that would be awesome. I'm just not sure if it's going to happen or not.
- Beers? Whis? You are the most fabulous I-Don't-Give-A-Single-Fuck villains ever. I prefer my antagonists to be Blue and Orange Morality Eldritch Abominations, but dear god I love you both. Never change. And Beers? THANK YOU FOR CALLING GOKU OUT ON HIS BEHAVIOR.
tl;dr Lol'd and would lol again. Check it out if you have a chance--it's one helluva ride.
Also read through a fantastic Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Maiden LP. Awesome, awesome, AWESOME story, amplified by an awesome, awesome, AWESOME LPer who manages to mix romance, humor, and drama all into one LP. Comes highly recommended! ...And will, in fact, probably be one of the projects I cross my Brainwashed!Goku fic over with. ...When I get to writing it.
I mean, the concept is simple: Goku is brainwashed and crazy. The other protagonists have to fix him while also dealing with the villain. ...I just keep wanting to make it more epic, though.
Eh, I'll figure it out.
